Understanding The Holiness Of God While Reading Holier Than Thou

Understanding The Holiness Of God

Recently, I wrote a post about several books that I am currently reading this Fall season. Honestly, it may travel to the winter season since I am now taking a break before getting back to school. I have been reading this book, Holier than thou by Jackie Hill Perry, and I wanted to share this book with you.

enjoying the fall season

This is what I am going to say if you’re interested in purchasing the book: If you desire to know about God, His Holiness, as well as why we should trust Him fully, I recommend the read.

This book is refreshing for me, in my own opinion.

Overall, the book is refreshing because I don’t usually read books about GOD. The bible is the only book I have been reading all my life. I was a murder mystery novel gal, but I had to let go of that, so now I am sticking to non-murdering genres and nonsexual novels.

Plus, I only read books that have significantly been recommended by others. But since I follow her on Instagram and have bought an earlier book of hers before, I decided to buy this one.

In this book, the author explains how wonderful and Holy God truly is and why He certainly deserves to be revered. I found this book to be profound, a simply great read, and a blessing to my life.

In this post, I wanted to highlight seven thoughts I pondered on when I read the book.

So let’s get started.

I would also post a video of the author’s why she wrote the book.

Understanding The Holiness Of God: GOD is Truth

“Whatever we do and however we identify, when near God, we will see the truth and nothing but it. That what God is, we are not. Holy. “

We were born with sin living in us for those who do not know. Through Adam, sin traversed through our veins, making its way throughout our whole body, rebelling our flesh so that we continue to dwell in our own self-interest rather than God’s. So when she (Jackie Hill Perry) mentions this, she also says how Isaiah was before the almighty GOD. And because He was before almighty GOD, it seemed as if Isaiah was exposed, in sin, to be precise.

It seemed that when you approach GOD, you cannot dare hide your darkness. You cannot hide your dark secrets because what is in the dark will come to light.

God is the light of men, and darkness could not overcome it.

God is the GOD of all truth, whether you believe it or not. And when we stand before HIM, there is a sense of purity, Holiness that isn’t in us. And GOD exposes that which should lead us to repent to even see that we are truly impure, dirty, unclean.

So what I am saying is this: God’s Holiness is so pure that we dare cannot stand before the Almighty Holy GOD. Our dirty sins cannot even stand before the almighty GOD.

Understanding The Holiness Of God

But through the excellent blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of GOD, who came on earth to save us, we can dare with boldness stand before our Father once again. His blood, the purity of His blood, cleanses us from all the sins that came from Adam.

So isn’t it better to confess our sins to HIM rather than just hide them?

If we are indeed His children, redeemed children, the last thing we desire to see is HIS judgment upon us. But repentance is a must when we come before HIM because how can we truly walk in our freedom without it?

“Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.’ And you forgave the guilt of my sin.” – Psalm 32:5 NIV

Even the psalmist mentioned that His sins were deep within him. He could not contain it, so he confessed it before the LORD instead of keeping the sins inside, and God forgave Him.

Plus, let’s not forget the benefits of the LORD, according to Psalms 103:12.

“as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”

So when you come to HIM, with a true heart of repentance, HE will forgive you. No ifs, and, or but. He sees who we indeed are, so why not just be our true self to HIM so that He can really change us into the beings we were meant to be for HIM and ONLY for HIM?

Understanding The Holiness Of God: He Sustains

God’s Holiness sustains us

When reading this, I thought that we are not ourselves but of GOD the Father. God’s power is at work within us that leads us to do what pleases HIM through the power of the Holy Spirit.

“God will continually revitalize you, implanting within you the passion for doing what pleases him.” Philippians 2:13 TPT

When we continue to lean on GOD, His WORD, His promises, by faith, this sustains us. This gives us peace. He will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in HIM (Isaiah 26:3 NIV).

Because GOD is GOD all by Himself, He is the GOD of Heaven and the Earth; he deserves our trust. We are His handiwork. We are His creation. Who are we to even say that He can’t be trusted, and I mean to the full?

Think about that.

Understanding The Holiness Of God: GOD is Beyond Our Understanding

“What if in our unbelief, there exists some part of us that doesn’t think too highly of the moral perfection of GOD? Is that not what of all is anyways? Not believing that God is honest to the point that we refuse to honor who HE is because we don’t believe what He’s said?” page 48-49

This is what I just mentioned. Isn’t it just enough to trust the Almighty GOD, who is soo great and vast that we cannot fathom or imagine? Or is that also the reason why we don’t trust Him because we don’t fully know HIM?

Well, that is true. We don’t honestly know GOD.

And some of us were like this, even myself. I sought the world and its desires, but it did not satisfy me. I didn’t want to trust in a GOD I could not see. But when I truly encountered God, I was changed.

And through Jesus Christ, we can. We are supposed to develop a relationship with GOD on a daily basis. It is necessary. Plus, why would He say to come to His throne of grace with confidence so that He may receive mercy and find grace in our time of need?

He desires us to come to Him. He loves us. We need to accept and receive this so much! Then we can genuinely seek GOD for who He is, our Father, Our Counselor, our Friend. He is the jewel we should pursue continuously.

Understanding The Holiness Of God: God is Beyond, Not Regular

“God is no regular being”

We need to understand that God is not man. The WORD says that HE is human that He should lie, not a human being that He should change His mind.

He is independent of us. He is GOD all by himself. He is the creator of heaven and earth. The bible tells of wonderful truths about people encountering GOD in the mightiest ways. Even today, we can see GOD working.

God is not a regular being. He’s more than we can even imagine. We cannot and never should put Him in a bubble. If He created Heaven and Earth in six days, How great is HE? Even greater.

“Hear O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:4-5 NIV

Our own understanding is very limited compared to GOD. That is why His ways and thoughts are not ours.

It can NEVER match.

He’s soo much more significant than what the world has to offer, no matter how it may glamorously look. It can never compare to GOD’s gloriousness.

That is why He is HOLY because He is above any words we can describe. I can’t even put a word to GOD because what I say can’t ever describe HIM. So HE is not a regular being. He surpasses our understanding.

Understanding The Holiness Of God

Understanding The Holiness Of God: GOD is too Holy

“In our attempt to make sense of GOD through our human lenses, we’ve actually lowered the bar for how God is. Becoming frustrated in His inability to be weak, we want GOD to be just like us because maybe then, faith wouldn’t be such a task. But He can’t and He won’t because He too Holy to be like anyone other than Himself.”

You know that I didn’t plan each quote to align with each other like that? Isn’t that the great HOLY SPIRIT at work! Bless GOD!

So, as I mentioned, we can never place GOD in our perspective because our understanding is limited. Through HIM, we walk in wisdom and receive understanding. Not the other way around.

Therefore, He can’t be us. First off, that does not make sense because He is our creator. This reminds me of a song that came out in the 90s “What if GOD was one of us?” just the title. I don’t really know what the song is about. Second, that would make GOD like us, which He is not.

But Jesus Christ came on earth to be like us, in human form, overcoming sin so that we have the victory through Him. Therefore, it is not us fighting for victory but living from victory. Therefore, our effort is not through our own work anymore but through Jesus Christ by the power of GOD that is at work within us.

Understanding The Holiness Of God: In Him, We Exist

“We exist only because He does. And we will continue to exist because He will too. “

As said, we are His creation, not the other way around. We exist because of GOD. We live and breathe because of GOD. Therefore, without GOD, we would not even exist. But we were created for His purpose. We were made to encounter Him, walk with Him, praise Him, and enjoy life with HIM.

And you know that we will continue to exist forever after this life? When the new heaven and new earth come, we will continue to live, and GOD will surely be our GOD. Isn’t that great news?!?!

“‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said,’ We are His offspring.'” Acts 17:28 NIV

Understanding The Holiness Of God: Idolatry Is Blind

“We take what GOD called good and remove a letter. Give it ultimate status in our lives and hope with all of our hearts and it will be deity that we’ve baptized it as.”

Remember the people of Israel when they built a god and worshipped it (Exodus 32)? We all know that what they did was idolatry, first because they brought GOD down to their level and did not thoroughly worship GOD for who He truly was.

Therefore, God is Spirit, so HIS true worshippers must worship HIM in Spirit and Truth.

Second, they lacked faith. They were waiting for Moses to come, but when he did not, they decided to make a calf, representing GOD, when this god was not the true GOD.

And that is what is happening with most of us. We are seeking things we can see physically, thinking that it is an accurate representation of GOD when it is not. We can make anything our idol: our parents, celebrities, material things, things we align with feelings such as love, and anything that we seek first before GOD for the most part.

And that should not be.

God is our first love, and therefore when we really seek HIM, we will see HIM as the GOD who meets all our needs and fulfills the desire of our hearts that aligns with HIS will. He will be our GOD, who is great and awesome.

If we understand God’s true Holiness, we can know how to truly see Him as He is, Holy, Righteous, and have true reverence fear of Him.

Hope this post blessed you, and I hope you grab this book. It will bless you and revere GOD even more. He is worthy of being praised AND worthy of all our praises.

Until Next Time.
