Discovering Your Identity in Christ

Discovering your identity in Christ is more than just knowing who you are and how you can accomplish everyday tasks through Him. It is knowing WHO He is to know WHOSE you are.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully make; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 NIV

Do you sometimes ask if you’re a child of GOD? Do you find yourself asking what my identity is in Christ?

Earlier in the years, I wanted to know who I was as a person. I literally would sometimes sit myself down or browse personality tests and Enneagrams. I was curious about my identity. I knew I belonged to God, but I asked myself, what if there was more?

You see, because I decided to look at other things, I did not read the WORD about the GOD who my identity is. That is where I find my identity. I distanced myself from the WORD to look at what the world was telling me about who I was.

Anything that you seek more than GOD turns into an idol.

Nothing is wrong with personality tests, but if you let them become your idol when you seek them to pursue and even identify your identity. And that is what I did. I made this personality tests my idols instead of the ONE who knows me by my name.

Knowing my identity through personality tests was limited, and it was not enough. It was better to know who God made me be, which was more remarkable; my identity in Jesus Christ was more than enough and is pretty special.

Psalm 139:1-2 (NIV), the Psalmist understood very clear first and foremost,

“you have searched me, O LORD, and you know me…You discern my going out and my lying down, you are familiar with all my ways.”

So you see, GOD knows us from the inside and out. He knows all about us. GOD is also familiar with all of our ways. So therefore, He knows us better than we know ourselves. So, therefore, in Him, our identity is found. Therefore, to know us, we have to know GOD first.

Our identity is only found in Jesus Christ.

And according to the Book of Romans, your identity in Christ is more than enough. Our newfound identity in Christ leads us to be more than we could ever imagine. Therefore, I wanted to provide a couple of identity qualities that make us each stand out and set us apart from the world.

This post encourages you to lean on Christ and GOD, who made you wonderful in ways you cannot imagine. And from there, He is able to unfold who you were made to be in His eyes.

Let’s get started.

Discovering Your Identity In Christ

Discovering Your Identity in Christ: You are GOD’s child through Jesus Christ.

When you are believed in your heart and confess with your heart to receive Jesus Christ as your LORD and savior, you automatically become a child of God (Romans 10:9; John 1:12). In Christ, you are righteous before GOD, and you are blessed with every spiritual blessing that comes from above. In Christ, you are given everything you need to live a godly life (2 Peter 1:3). Meaning that your identity in Christ means you are blessed.

Discovering Your Identity in Christ: You are an instrument of righteousness.

Your identity in Christ is an instrument of righteousness (Romans 6:13). This means that you are right standing with God through Jesus Christ. What does it mean to be right standing with GOD? That means that you are precious in His eyes. You are no longer doing things that shame you but glorify GOD. You are no longer bound to the flesh, but the Holy Spirit lives in you. You no longer seek bad things but do good things through grace and faith, leading you to holy living. You do not overcome by evil but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). That’s your identity in Christ.

Discovering Your Identity in Christ: You are no longer bound to sin.

We were bound to our sin and were children of the world, the evil one. But of this new identity, we are now bound to Jesus Christ, who in Him we have life and life more abundantly. Your identity in Christ means dying in the flesh and living with the Holy Spirit. Your new identity is not living as the world does but living in hope, love, patience, and loving our enemies. That’s our new identity in Jesus Christ.

Discovering Your Identity in Christ: You are no longer under condemnation (Romans 8:1-2).

But are set free from the law of sin and death. No longer bound to sin, but bound to life in Christ Jesus. In life, you are no longer in the flesh but in the Spirit, the Spirit of the living GOD who teaches you and instructs you in the way you should go and counsel you with His loving eye on you (Romans 7:6; Psalm 32:8). So when GOD sees you, He does not see your sin but sees your new identity: Jesus Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Discovering Your Identity in Christ: You are bound to faith, not doubt or fear.

Because you have been given a spirit of fear but love, power, and sound of mind (2 Timothy 1:7), anything that comes your way will not lead to fear but to stand against it. And by faith, we will say to the mountain, be uprooted and cast into the sea. Our identity in Christ means that we use the WORD of GOD to speak to the mountains and our situations. This also means you are more than a conqueror.

In God through Jesus Christ, we are everything we should be, identity and all.

I hope this post blessed you.

Until Next Time.
